At first, I assumed our little boy was simply fascinated by a tree’s bark — maybe its unique texture had caught his attention. But within seconds, my husband’s expression changed to sheer alarm as he rushed forward and yanked him away.
What looked like a normal tree trunk turned out to be hiding something far more dangerous — a cluster of Lonomia caterpillars, among the most poisonous in the world.

Even a light touch can cause internal bleeding, dizziness, or in the worst cases, death. Young children, older adults, and those with health conditions are especially vulnerable.
What makes them particularly frightening is how perfectly they blend in — their color and shape mimic tree bark so well that most people wouldn’t notice them until it’s too late.
Once we realized what we had encountered, we immediately called local wildlife officials. Specialists arrived soon after and carefully removed the caterpillars. Warning signs were later placed nearby to keep others safe.
That experience changed how I view nature. Now, when I take my grandchildren for walks, I always bring gloves, a magnifying glass, and a small safety kit. Staying cautious doesn’t mean living in fear — it means being ready for the unexpected.
To all parents and grandparents: teach your kids about hidden dangers like this. A simple warning could save a life. Let’s protect our families — not just with love, but with knowledge. 🌿❤️
